First, figure out the actual problem
Before touching anything, check what’s wrong. Is the bulb completely dead, flickering, or just loose? Sometimes it’s not even the bulb. It could be the switch, the holder, or even a power issue. Try turning the switch on and off a couple of times or plugging another device into the same socket to confirm there’s electricity.
Turn off the power (seriously, don’t skip this)
This is the step most people ignore. Always turn off the switch, and if possible, cut power from the main circuit. It only takes a second and can save you from a shock.
Let the bulb cool down
If the bulb was recently on, give it a few minutes. Hot bulbs can burn your fingers and may even crack if handled too quickly.
Remove the old bulb
Hold the bulb gently but firmly.
- For screw-type bulbs: turn it counterclockwise
- For pin-type bulbs: push slightly and twist or pull, depending on the design
If it’s stuck, don’t force it too hard. A small piece of cloth or glove can help you get a better grip.
Check the holder
Take a quick look at the socket. If it’s dusty, rusty, or loose, that could be the real issue. Clean it gently with a dry cloth. If you see burn marks or damage, it’s better to replace the holder instead of just the bulb.
Install the new bulb
Pick a bulb with the correct wattage and type. Then:
- Screw it in clockwise until snug (not too tight)
- Make sure it’s properly aligned and secure
Turn the power back on
Switch everything back on and test it. If it lights up, you’re done. If not, the problem might be with the wiring, switch, or power supply.
If it still doesn’t work
At this point, don’t keep guessing. Electrical issues can get tricky. It’s safer to call an electrician rather than risk damaging your wiring or getting hurt.
Quick tips people usually forget
- Don’t touch bulbs with wet hands
- Avoid using higher wattage than recommended
- LED bulbs last longer and save electricity
- If bulbs keep blowing out, the issue isn’t the bulb
